The Sunset Show Poster Design

By January 2, 2023January 3rd, 2023Artwork, poster

On Tuesday, January 10th Mike Votava and The Ding Dongs will be playing their first show of 2023 at The Sunset in Ballard.  I couldn’t be more excited about it. This will also be our first time playing The Sunset.

Two other cool rock bands will be joining us on the bill. Mono A Mono, a band that contains two Ding Dongs Nick Droz (guitar) and Rick Weber (drums). And also the band Night Lunch.

I would love to see you there! Did you get your tickets yet? You can get your tickets right here.

Every time The Ding Dongs play a rock show I get to also make a show poster.

Here is the poster I designed for this show.

Mike Votava and The Ding Dongs at The Sunset Show Poster

I went minimal with this one using not very much text and only a few colors. The tallish display font pairs well with the tall white “cliff” on the right side. The vignette texture around the edges adds a spotlight effect, which helps draw the eye to the text at the center of the page.

The flaming marble texture against the red background adds depth and an element of danger as if the background is erupting. Speaking of danger, what could be more dangerous than a crazy death-defying Vespa jump across a gorge?

Do you think that little guy is going to make it? I doubt it.

I used three different images to composite the final design.

Image #1: A photo of some dudes standing on a cliff. (credit Unsplash)

This photo terrifies me. I can’t believe those dudes are standing that close to the edge of that cliff. Seems like a bad idea. What if a big gust of wind comes along and blows them off the side?

I only used the “cliff” shape in my poster design. The rest of the photo I threw in the trash. Didn’t need it.

My original idea for the design concept was to keep it more photorealistic and add in some collage-like elements.  The cliff and the background were going to look about the same, but  I was going to replace the standing dudes with something more exciting like a ninja battle or a wrestling match. I fiddled with that idea for a bit before I changed my mind. I couldn’t quite get it to work.

Image #2: a chatzke diorama of a frog lady on Vespa getting stopped by lady cop (credit Pixabay)

I’ve had my eye on this photo for many years. I’m stoked that I was finally able to use it for a project. Though I am a little sad that in the final poster it’s hard to tell that there’s a frog on the Vespa.

Image #3: Ramp

I used this image of a ramp to model the ramp in my poster. Out of the three images I used for the design, this one wins the award for being the most boring.

And there you have it!

Thanks for looking at my poster.

Don’t forget to come to the show on January 10th at the Sunset.
